Nigerian government considers state pardon to decongest prisons

Written by  May 25, 2017

The federal government has said it is considering a state pardon for inmates through prerogative of mercy, as part of measures to decongest prisons.

Interior Minister Abdulrahman Dambazzau disclosed this while speaking to State House correspondents after the Federal Executive Council meeting.

He listed other options being considered as conversion of death sentence to life imprisonment for those who had spent over 10 years in prison.

Dambazzau identified the issue of awaiting trial inmates as the major problem responsible for prison congestion, as according to him, over 70 per cent of prison inmates are awaiting trial.

The minister said the prison system had become over-burdened in terms of rehabilitation, feeding and providing other essential materials thereby making prison administration difficult.
