The theme for this year’s celebration is albinism and skin cancer: the need for everyone’s involvement. The Albino Foundation in a statement said this year’s National albinism day is aimed at raising funds for the treatment of albinos affected with skin cancer in Nigeria.
This is because skin cancer remains the biggest challenge confronting persons with albinism in Nigeria due to the vulnerable nature of their skin to sunlight especially in this part of the world.
Founder of the Albino Foundation, Jake Epele expressed concern that the majority of the 27,000 person with albinism affected by skin cancer in Nigeria do not access treatment due to poverty, ignorant, myths and misconceptions about albinism.
